A
little over 100 years ago, gold was discovered at Kuaotunu and more
than 1000 people lived and worked there. As well as dwellings, there
were hotels, shops, a school and a post office. Access was by sea
and with no jetty, passengers were loaded into a surfboat, transferred
to horse and dray and finally often carried or piggybacked the last
few metres to the shore.
